The Evolution of FIFA: A Journey Through the Years

The main supplier of almost all sports simulators is Electronic Arts, which probably produces any sport on any platform. They are monopolists in their business and are very meticulous in creating each game, collecting information on their sports industry over a year so that their games are indistinguishable from reality.

Entire generations of gamers play FIFA games. This is a great title to just relax after a hard day at work or have fun at a party with friends. In addition to the game itself, boosting services are also popular, which provide various services to accompany players – the purchase of fc 24 coins, in particular. This is convenient because players do not have to spend a lot of time and effort to get the team of their dreams.

And since changes are expected in the FIFA game in the near future, we decided to recall how its development took place from the very first release to the present day.

FIFA International Soccer (1993)

Back in 1993, the very first part of the series was released, which brought players many hours of joy. If you delve a little into the history of sports simulators, then in all previous games you could only play from a top view, which was very inconvenient. But with enormous popularity came those people who criticized this game. One interesting cheat is worth remembering because it has not been removed to this day.

You could block the opposing goalkeeper right at the moment when a player was clearing the ball and immediately score yourself, which made the game just a run to the goal in an attempt to quickly pin the goalkeeper.

By the way, it is worth saying that almost all the national teams that existed at that time were added to the game, but all the names and surnames of the players were fictitious. Electronic Arts didn’t want to immediately spend money on expensive licenses to test demand and make a quality product in the future.

FIFA Soccer 95 (1994)

The engine remained the same, so the gameplay was practically no different from the previous part, but the developers improved the graphics and now the form of the teams has become even more beautiful. In addition to updated graphics, new national leagues were added, and the names, although fictitious, were still very similar to their real prototypes.

FIFA Soccer 96 (1995)

Really noticeable improvements have already begun with this game; a completely new engine has been written for the game Ball, which is very similar to modern prototypes and follows the player from the side. They implemented the “Virtual Stadium” function, which made any match even more like a real one.

More than one schoolchild has already skipped classes for the sake of this game, enjoying the indescribable atmosphere and almost realistic graphics. Starting this year, the publisher finally listened to the requests of the players and bought all the licenses that allowed them to play for their favorite players, which had a very positive effect on the sales of the game, making FIFA the most significant football simulator on the planet.

FIFA 97 (1996)

Starting with this game, we will no longer see the word Soccer in the title, but in return, we get smoother animations for each player and minor improvements to the graphical component. But the main feature was the ability to play on closed fields and the addition of real commentators, such as John Motson and Andy Gray. In those years, even parents did not understand whether this was a game or a real match and sat down to watch the next game.

FIFA 98: Road to World Cup (1997)

Here the graphics have already been completely redesigned, and it has become really pleasing to the eye, no more polygonal football players and square faces in the stadium. Again, at the tearful requests of fans, they created an editor where you could not only create a dream team but also edit each player separately.

However the improvements to the game did not end there; an original soundtrack appeared for the game, which included all the best songs of that year. And the artificial intelligence became smarter and playing alone was more interesting than ever. Also, do not forget about the addition in the name – Road to World Cup, a whole mode was added, which included all the national teams of the 1997 World Tournament.

FIFA 99 – 2002 (1998-2001)

The graphics of these parts did not grow so much, but the gameplay was improved for smoother play and all kinds of leagues were added. Finally, there was a passing power, which was divided into red, yellow, and green scales.

We improved the dynamic lighting and emotions of football players, making the game more and more realistic. The developers went even further and all this time recreated real stadiums, which included very live fans, and the number of commentators doubled.

FIFA 2003-23 (2002-2022)

It was from this part that the classic pipeline began, in which we were offered new graphics and minor improvements. There was a race for new generation consoles and therefore it was necessary to quickly rewrite the engine to optimize many functions, which was very successfully implemented.

With each part, new clubs and stadiums appear, which adds variety. And the clashes between football players took them to a new cinematic level, where you yourself have already forgotten whether you are playing or watching the match.

Future of the game

In May 2022, Electronic Arts announced it wouldn’t renew its contract with the International Football Federation after FIFA 23. Instead, later this month, they’ll launch EA Sports FC. While EA has reassured fans that the gameplay won’t drastically change, they’ve secured licenses and will continue popular game modes like Ultimate Team, Career, Pro Clubs, Volta Football, and tournaments like the Champions League and Europa League.

This is exciting news for fans of the game, but we’ll be looking forward to the release to see for ourselves how the game will change.
