What If EA SPORTS FC Had Ranked Divisions Like LoL?

Why does hitting Diamond in League of Legends feel more rewarding than going 14–6 in FUT Champions? It’s a question many competitive FIFA or EA SPORTS FC players have asked at some point.

League of Legends has a ranked ladder that is clear, structured, and highly visible. From Iron to Challenger, every win feels like a step up. EA SPORTS FC, on the other hand, offers modes like Division Rivals and FUT Champions, but they don’t really feel like a true ranked experience. So what would happen if FUT adopted a proper ladder system like LoL?

Let’s break it down.

1. How Ranked Works in League of Legends

League of Legends features a well-known ranked system split into clear tiers: Iron, Bronze, Silver, Gold, Platinum, Emerald, Diamond, Master, Grandmaster, and Challenger. Each tier (except the top ones) is divided into four divisions.

To climb the ladder, you earn League Points (LP). Win games, earn LP. Lose, and you drop LP. Once you hit 100 LP, you enter a promotion series. After a successful promo, you move up. If you fall too far below 0 LP, you’re at risk of demotion.

Matchmaking is based on hidden MMR (Matchmaking Rating), which ensures you’re matched against players of similar skill.

There are also seasonal splits, currently two per year. Your final rank at the end of a split earns you cosmetics, banners, and exclusive skins. And since ranks are publicly visible, there’s always a clear sense of where you stand.

That level of transparency and consistency is one reason why League’s competitive ecosystem thrives. From ranked players trying to hit Diamond to fans tracking teams at Worlds or exploring the best LoL betting sites during major tournaments, the structure encourages engagement at every level.

2. How “Ranked” Works in EA SPORTS FC

EA SPORTS FC has competitive modes, but they don’t follow the same ladder format.

Division Rivals:

  • You start in a low division and climb through wins.
  • Progress is based on Skill Rating, but it’s not visible in the same way LP is in LoL.
  • Once you reach the Elite Division, you unlock the top competitive tier and can view a limited global leaderboard (top 200 players).
  • There are seasonal resets, but they don’t change the core progression system.

FUT Champions:

  • You must qualify by playing a separate Play-Off phase.
  • Once qualified, you get access to the Weekend League, where you play up to 20 matches.
  • Rewards are based on your number of wins, not your long-term rank.
  • There’s no global ranking system or public standing.

In short, there is no visible ladder, no tier names beyond “Division 1” or “Elite”, and very little long-term progression.

3. Key Differences Between LoL and EA FC

Visible TiersYes (Iron to Challenger)Only Divisions 10 to Elite
Public PrestigeYes (stream titles, badges)Minimal outside of top 200 Elite
Seasonal ResetsTwice a yearYes, but with no ladder reset

4. What If EA FC Had a LoL-Style Ladder?

Now imagine a FUT experience with the same structure as LoL’s ranked mode.

  • Named tiers like Bronze, Silver, Gold, and so on instead of just Div 10 to Elite.
  • Visible points (LP-style) gained or lost after each match so you always know where you stand.
  • Promotion games when you reach the top of your tier to add tension and achievement.
  • Seasonal resets that grant in-game rewards or cosmetics for reaching specific ranks.
  • A global leaderboard for all tiers, not just Elite, where players can compare ranks.
  • A potential scouting pipeline for EA SPORTS FC Pro where climbing the ranked ladder could earn recognition.

5. Pros and Cons

Benefits:

  • Clear sense of progress and achievement
  • Encourages players to compete more regularly
  • Adds prestige and long-term goals to FUT
  • Easier scouting and rankings for esports

Drawbacks:

  • May intimidate casual players
  • Could encourage boosting or frustration with promotion losses
  • Adds pressure and might reduce fun for those just looking to play casually

6. What Players Are Saying

Players on Reddit often voice frustration about the lack of a clear ranked system and some even suggest improvements similar to LoL or Valorant. For example:

“The game should rank players with a background algorithm based on Glicko … There should be a skill rating system similar to Elite Division, but extended to all players instead of the divisions.”

Another user shared that FUT Champions can be enjoyable while Division Rivals feels like a grind:

“I love Champs because it’s relatively chill for me. … Rival grind is awful.”

Reddit threads and YouTube comments show players are aware that the current system lacks long-term competitive motivation.

Where EA FC Could Go From Here

EA SPORTS FC has the player base and esports infrastructure to support a more structured ranked system. A ladder like League of Legends with named tiers, visible progress, and real status could bring a new level of meaning to Division Rivals and FUT Champions.

It would need careful balancing so casual players don’t feel left behind, but the potential for a deeper, more satisfying ranked experience is clearly there.
